Using a public charger for the first time can feel unfamiliar, but the process quickly becomes routine. Here is what to expect.
1. Before you arrive
- Find a compatible charger in a charging app and check it shows as available.
- Set up your account and payment method in advance, or check if the station offers app-less payment.
2. Park and check
Park in the charging bay so the cable reaches your charging port comfortably. Check the charger screen for any error message, and look at the connector for visible damage before using it.
3. Start the session
Depending on the station, you start by scanning a QR code with your phone, using the app, tapping an RFID card, or following the on-screen payment steps. The screen will usually show the price before you start.
4. Plug in
Open your car's charging port, take the correct connector from the charger and push it firmly into the port until it clicks. The charger and your car will communicate for a few seconds, then charging begins.
5. Monitor
The charger screen, the app and your car's display all show progress: power, energy delivered, cost so far and battery level. You can wait nearby, get food or take a break.
6. Stop and unplug
Stop the session from the app, the charger screen or your car, depending on the system. Unlock the connector (some cars unlock automatically when you unlock the doors), unplug, and return the cable to its holder.
7. Move your car
Once charging is done, move your car so the next driver can charge. Many stations charge idle fees for staying plugged in after charging ends.
If a session will not start, try once more, check the connector is fully inserted, then use the help number on the charger. Do not force a connector.
