Pull into a charging station and you may see several different plugs. Knowing which one fits your vehicle saves time and confusion. Your car's manual and charging port tell you for certain, but this guide covers what you will usually find in India.
Type 2 (AC)
The Type 2 connector is the standard for AC charging of most modern electric cars in India. You will find it on home wall chargers and on slower public AC chargers at offices, malls and hotels. Many cars come with a cable that has a Type 2 plug.
CCS2 (DC fast charging)
CCS2 (Combined Charging System 2) is the main DC fast-charging connector for electric cars in India. It combines the Type 2 shape with two large DC pins below. Cars with a CCS2 port can use both AC charging (using the top part) and DC fast charging (using the full connector). Most public fast chargers in India offer CCS2.
GB/T and older standards
Some older Indian EVs, particularly early lower-voltage models, used the Bharat DC-001 charging standard, which uses a GB/T connector. You may still see these at some stations. A few imported cars use CHAdeMO, which is now uncommon in India.
Light EVs
Two- and three-wheelers have often used a variety of connectors and portable chargers. India has introduced a standard connector system for light EVs to bring more consistency over time.
| Connector | Type of charging | Common on |
|---|---|---|
| Type 2 | AC | Most modern cars, home and destination chargers |
| CCS2 | DC fast (and AC) | Most modern cars, public fast chargers |
| GB/T (Bharat DC-001) | DC | Some older lower-voltage EVs |
| Light EV connectors | AC and DC | Scooters, motorcycles, three-wheelers |
Before a trip, filter your charging app by your car's connector type, so you only see chargers you can actually use.
