Safety and certification standards your chargers should meet

Standards protect drivers, equipment and your business. The key standards and certifications to ask for when buying EV chargers in India.

TEST CERTIFICATE IS 17017IEC 61851CEA SAFETYIP · IK RATINGS

EV chargers handle high voltages and currents in public spaces, often outdoors. Standards make sure they are designed, built and installed safely, and that they work with the vehicles drivers bring. When you buy chargers, ask for evidence of compliance, not just a claim.

Standards are updated over time. Confirm the current versions and any mandatory requirements with your supplier, installer and the relevant authorities before purchase.

Communication and interoperability

  • OCPP for connection to management platforms, ideally with certification.
  • ISO 15118 for vehicle-to-charger communication and Plug and Charge, where supported.
  • OCPI on the platform side for roaming.

Installation and electrical safety

Installations must follow the applicable Central Electricity Authority safety regulations, which include provisions for EV charging stations, along with the relevant electrical installation standards. Key elements include correct earthing, protective devices, emergency stops, cable routing and clear signage.

Environmental ratings

  • IP rating: protection against dust and water, important for outdoor sites and monsoon conditions.
  • IK rating: resistance to impact.
  • Operating temperature range: chargers should be rated for local summer heat.

Scheme requirements

Publicly supported chargers may need to meet specific standards. For example, the PM E-DRIVE charging guidelines specify connector types and power levels for each vehicle category, and require compliance with Phased Manufacturing Programme rules.

What to ask suppliers

  • Test reports and certificates from recognised laboratories.
  • The exact standards and versions the charger complies with.
  • IP, IK and temperature ratings.
  • OCPP certification details.
